After seeing a RAW add in the local Tas Country paper, Ivan* noted the RAW Gauge and realised he had not been feeling well lately. He related to the "How's your personal battery level?" and described himself as "having a flat battery."
Ivan reached out to RAW on the 1800 phone service, eager to join the Open Road program. Kerri, a RAW staff member working within the Open Roads program, phoned Ivan the next day. After a lengthy conversation, Kerri decided it would be best to arrange a face-to-face visit with Ivan so he could share his story over a cup of tea.
Ivan, a retired truck driver with 35 years of experience, spent long hours behind the wheel, building his business and paying off his truck. He was passionate about improving the industry for drivers and operators, advocating for fair rates and decent contracts. However, over time, Ivan's marriage broke down, and his physical health declined, leading to early retirement.
Ivan disclosed to Kerri his ongoing medical conditions and intermittent depression over more than 20 years. A recent family issue had exacerbated his condition, and he was neglecting his diet.
A visit to his local doctor left Ivan feeling disappointed; the doctor seemed disinterested and failed to grasp Ivan's situation.
Over the next few months, Kerri assisted Ivan in finding solutions, encouraging him to seek better medication management through his local chemist. Ivan mentioned difficulties with household tasks and a lack of appetite. Kerri facilitated a call with Integrated Living for additional support at home, including help with maintenance, cleaning, meal preparation, and companionship.
During their visits, Ivan shared stories about his children and the joy of spending time with his grandchildren. He reminisced about walking his dogs, the old days driving Mack trucks, and looking forward to reunions with lifelong friends.
Kerri continues to support Ivan, helping him find community groups and suitable employment for his conditions.
At a recent local community fundraiser, Ivan shared his experience with RAW’s CEO and expressed that he might not have survived without RAW’s support.
Ivan was impressed with the help he received from Kerri, finding her down-to-earth nature and practical conversations particularly helpful.
