September is National Suicide Prevention Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a time to shine a light on hope, connection, and the power of looking out for one another. For Rural Alive & Well (RAW), it’s a chance to celebrate rural Tasmania, while reminding people that support is always close by.

Life in the country isn’t without its challenges. The long hours, the unpredictability of weather, the demands of family and farm can sometimes feel overwhelming. But rural life also comes with great strengths. Our communities are known for pitching in, lending a hand, and finding practical solutions when things get tough. That same spirit of working together is at the heart of suicide prevention, it reminds us that none of us are alone, and help is always possible.

At RAW, we believe prevention is not only about responding in a crisis. It’s about building strong connections every day. It’s in the simple things: checking in with a neighbour, stopping for a yarn in the yards, or sharing a cuppa with a mate. Often it’s those small, ordinary moments that give someone the courage to keep going.

We’ve seen time and again how a conversation can change a life. When someone feels listened to without judgement, the weight they’ve been carrying can feel lighter. That’s why RAW workers spend their days out in the community, not in offices, but in sheds, paddocks, and kitchens, walking alongside people and reminding them that support is never far away.

National Suicide Prevention Month is also about hope. It’s about recognising the strength that already exists in our communities and building on it. We see hope in families who come together after a tough season, in neighbours who keep an eye out for each other, and in the quiet acts of kindness that are woven into everyday rural life.

This September, we encourage everyone to pause and check in, not only with those around you, but with yourself as well. Celebrate the small wins, take pride in the work you do, and remember that reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

If you or someone you know could use a listening ear, RAW is here 24/7. Call us anytime on 1800 RAW TAS (1800 729 827). Together, we can build hopeful, connected, and resilient rural communities right across Tasmania.
